About us

To increase economic freedom in the world.

Founded in 2012, Coinbase is the largest U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange, serving over 100 million users across more than 100 countries. The company's mission is to increase economic freedom for over 1 billion people by building the emerging onchain platform and updating the global financial system. Beyond consumer trading, Coinbase offers institutional custody and trading through Coinbase Prime, developer infrastructure including the Base layer-2 network, and payment solutions for merchants. The company operates with over 4,700 employees and reported $7.18 billion in annual revenue as of 2025, maintaining $11.3 billion in cash reserves. Recent innovations include AI agents that can autonomously execute trades and 24/7 trading for precious metals futures.

Products

The core platform enables buying, selling, and storing crypto assets, with Coinbase Advanced serving professional traders. Coinbase Prime provides institutional custody, execution, and staking services, while Coinbase Commerce handles merchant payments. The company operates Base, a layer-2 Ethereum network, and offers developer APIs for building crypto applications. Recent launches include Coinbase One subscription service, AI-powered trading agents, and expanded into traditional assets like gold and silver futures with 24/7 trading.

Funding

Coinbase raised $547 million across 13 private funding rounds before going public in April 2021 at a $28.7 billion valuation. Early investors included Y Combinator, Andreessen Horowitz, and Union Square Ventures. Since its IPO, the company has utilized debt financing, including a $2 billion post-IPO debt round in August 2025. Total funding across all rounds reached $32.6 billion, with recent investors including Paradigm and Serena Ventures.

Recent news

In June 2026, Coinbase achieved a significant regulatory milestone by becoming the first Futures Commission Merchant approved by the CFTC to offer onshore U.S. traders direct access to global crypto perpetual futures, while simultaneously launching 24/7 trading for gold and silver futures in the United States. Additionally, the company introduced 'Coinbase for Agents,' a tool enabling AI agents to autonomously manage portfolios, execute crypto trades, and make payments using the x402 protocol, alongside an in-app, SEC- and CFTC-registered AI financial advisor named 'Coinbase Advisor'.

Technology

Backend services are built primarily in Go for high-concurrency performance, with some Python and Ruby in the stack. Infrastructure runs on AWS with Kubernetes orchestration and Terraform for infrastructure as code. BuildKite handles CI/CD pipelines, while Kafka powers event-driven architectures for real-time data streaming. The platform uses both SQL and NoSQL databases, with GraphQL and gRPC for API communication. Frontend development centers on React and TypeScript, with React Native for mobile apps. Monitoring includes comprehensive logging, metrics, tracing, and debugging tools along with rate limiting, caching, load balancing, and circuit breakers.
