About us

To build the next generation of ventures that redefine how people connect, play, and interact in the future of the internet.

Founded in 2012, Improbable started as a pioneer in large-scale virtual world simulations but has evolved into a venture builder focused on AI, Web3, and the metaverse. The company combines deep technical expertise with capital to create and scale new ventures from the ground up. Based in Cambridge with a remote-first culture, Improbable has launched 17 ventures with 7 exits, including the recent sale of Imporium to Yuga Labs in December 2025. The Somnia Foundation, backed by Improbable, operates an EVM L1 blockchain that launched in 2025 and processes over 1 million ERC-20 transactions per second. Rather than building a single product, Improbable partners with founders and incubates companies designed to define the next generation of the internet.

Products

Rather than shipping consumer products, Improbable builds and scales other companies. The venture builder combines capital, technical expertise, and operational support to help founders create businesses in AI, Web3, and the metaverse. Portfolio companies include MSquared, Jitter, and fan3. Historically, Improbable developed SpatialOS technology for large-scale multiplayer experiences and Project Morpheus for massive-scale gameplay. The Somnia Foundation represents their latest venture, operating what they claim is the fastest EVM L1 blockchain. Teams work across consumer apps, developer tools like SDKs and CLIs, and internal platform infrastructure.

Funding

Improbable has raised approximately $930 million across multiple rounds since 2012. The largest was a $502 million Series B led by SoftBank in May 2017, with participation from Horizons Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. Earlier funding included a $20 million round in 2015 from Andreessen Horowitz, Horizons Ventures, and Temasek. The company secured a $150 million venture round in April 2022 with SoftBank Vision Fund 2 participating, reaching a valuation of $3.36 billion. Recent activity focuses on venture exits rather than new fundraising, reflecting the shift to a venture builder model.

Recent news

On Dec 26, 2025, Improbable announced the sale of its Imporium Unreal creative studio and Unreal Creator Platform to Yuga Labs, while Yuga also received an ongoing license to Improbable’s metaverse technology in support of the Otherside metaverse. The announcement states that Imporium is a core contributor to Otherside’s Unreal experiences, and that Improbable would continue participating via licensing and the MSquared metaverse network’s interoperability framework.

Technology

TypeScript forms the core of the full-stack development environment, with Golang used for high-concurrency systems where needed. Frontend work uses React and Vue.js with Nuxt.js, while backend services run on Node.js and FastAPI. The infrastructure relies on Kubernetes for orchestration and Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, with cloud deployments on AWS and Google Cloud. AI initiatives use Python with PyTorch and PydanticAI frameworks. Development includes extensive CI/CD pipelines, DataDog for observability, and modern tooling for SDKs, APIs, and developer platforms. Teams use AI tools as multipliers and focus on shipping production-grade work end-to-end.

Benefits

The company operates with a remote-first culture and allows employees to work from abroad for limited periods. Benefits include unlimited vacation time that leadership actively encourages, plus 26 weeks of full-pay maternity leave and enhanced caregiver leave policies. Employees receive a £150 monthly allowance for personal spending, gym memberships, or dining, along with a dedicated home office setup budget. The London office features free breakfast and lunch, a gym, meditation spaces, and is dog-friendly. Health coverage includes Bupa insurance with no exclusions for pre-existing conditions, plus dental and vision coverage. Mental health platform access and relocation support are also provided.
