About us

To make Bitcoin work for everyone.

RootstockLabs builds Bitcoin-secured DeFi infrastructure that enables companies and financial institutions to offer borrowing, lending, investment, and payment solutions at global scale. As the key contributor to Rootstock—the largest and longest-running Bitcoin sidechain—the company transforms Bitcoin from a simple store of value into a foundation for practical financial services. The team operates at the intersection of crypto infrastructure and institutional finance, enabling compliant, scalable access to decentralized financial services powered by Bitcoin. Distribution happens B2B2C through regulated financial institutions. The company runs as a fully distributed, global team across Europe and Latin America.

Products

The core offering is the Rootstock Smart Contract Network, a Bitcoin sidechain that launched in 2018 and combines Bitcoin's security with Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. RootstockLabs also developed the Rootstock Infrastructure Framework (RIF), a suite of open protocols designed to scale and simplify dApp development. RIF Aggregation serves as a layer-2 scaling solution for onboarding users to DeFi. Atlas provides a single interface for moving BTC and other assets into Rootstock, with institutional custody integrations rolling out.

Funding

RootstockLabs has raised approximately $5.98 million across multiple funding rounds since its 2017 founding. Notable investors include BitFury Capital, Digital Currency Group, and Bitmain. The company was acquired by IOVLabs in November 2018. As of 2026, the company's valuation is estimated between $0 and $100 million, with reported revenues ranging from $10 to $50 million. The team has also run a $2.5M grants program for developers and ecosystem builders.

Recent news

In the last 12 months, RootstockLabs was reported to have launched “Atlas” on April 15, 2026—described as a single interface for bridging/moving bitcoin and other assets into Rootstock—covering BTC (via Bitcoin and Lightning) plus assets including ETH and USDC.

Technology

Backend development uses JVM-based languages including Java, Kotlin, and Scala, with C++ for performance-critical services. Smart contracts are written in Solidity, while Python and JavaScript handle security operations and tooling. The infrastructure runs on Amazon Web Services with collaboration through Google Workspace. Development workflows use GitHub for version control, Jira for project tracking, and Notion for documentation. Enterprise security relies on IAM systems, contextual access controls, and MDM/EDR endpoint management. The team increasingly integrates AI agents and automation tools for operational efficiency.

Benefits

The company offers 100% remote work from Europe and Latin America with access to global coworking spaces. Benefits include competitive compensation with performance bonuses and RIF Token Plan eligibility, up to 35 vacation days and 30 sick days, plus parental leave and paid year-end shutdown. There's a monthly allowance for contractors to support connectivity and well-being. Continuous learning is supported through annual training program sponsorship and language courses. Health support includes the OpenUp employee assistance program and emergency loan policy.
