As a Software Engineering Intern, you will be mentored by engineers from different technical backgrounds who all share a passion for technology, solving meaningful problems, and making tangible impact. You will join an established team at Kiva during an exciting time of growth and innovation. The ideal intern candidate is passionate about both our organizational mission and learning new skills. Effective communication is among the most important tools in your toolbox. You are always looking at how things can be improved and examine problems from all angles.

All interns must be physically based in the United States and have valid U.S. work authorization.

Internship Program:

  • Our 10 to 12-week summer internship program (with the option to extend) provides you with a comprehensive introduction to the microfinance, nonprofit, and tech spaces while being fully integrated into a team.
  • You will have the option to complete the internship remotely, or be based in Kiva's San Francisco or Portland oif COVID-19 safety measures permits.
  • You will report to and work closely with an engineering manager while also having the support of an engineering mentor buddy.
  • You will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of projects. At the end of your internship, you will present your project to the engineering organization.
  • We will pair you with a dedicated engineer to ensure the success of your project. They will be your go-to person for any questions, suggestions, advice, and providing constructive feedback.
  • You will engage with executives and industry leaders through intern and company wide events.
  • You will participate in professional career development workshops and memorable fun events with fellow interns, teammates, and full-timers.

You will:

  • Learn about microfinance, nonprofit, and engineering best practices at Kiva.
  • Learn and work across a variety of technologies like Vue.js, node.js, kotlin, cloud-based microservices, and distributed ledger.
  • Learn modern software engineering processes and experience development cycles from conception to deployment into production.
  • Contribute to our core services and build scalable programs that standardize information flow and increase operational efficiency.
  • Be part of a close-knit engineering team and have an experienced mentor who considers it their job to make sure you're growing the skills you need.
  • Own a project that has a serious impact on Kiva’s work. For example, a past intern project involved securely and quickly translating 3M+ citizen identities into blockchain wallets while another intern used the latest open source visual regression tools to ensure a consistent user experience when onboarding new banking customers in communities with limited financial assess.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Excited to learn new languages and technologies.
  • Willing to dive in and learn by doing.
  • Ready to work with others to solve hard problems.
