What are some new jobs that Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies will create?
I recently noticed this question on Quora and decided to write down a short reply. Having spent the last 7 months researching the employment market in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry, I thought that I can give a quick overview. However, it turned out to grow to a long text piece and I decided that it might be a good idea to bring it to a blog post.
Looking over the last 2 years in the Crypto and Blockchain space, I would say that there are a few very specific job roles that are being formed in the industry and they are quite unique to the general employment market. It totally makes sense to spend some time and discuss them, because they can really turn into some golden opportunities in the future.
But before we get into that, let’s mention shortly the most common jobs that you can apply to today in Blockchain (and of course, you can find tons of them on Crypto Careers):
- Engineering jobs in Blockchain
- Marketing / Social Media / PR jobs in Blockchain
- Finance jobs in Blockchain
- Legal / Compliance jobs in Blockchain
- Customer Services jobs in Blockchain
- UX/UI Design jobs in Blockchain
In general, none of these categories is really new for any industry to be precise, but they represent the highest demand right now and are partially newly created jobs in a new industry. Let’s take “Legal and Compliance” for example - you need a very special skillset and knowledge to be a lawyer in the blockchain space. On the other hand, this is a kind of a specialisation on top your existing education, so it is not really a unique new job. The same rule applies to a C++ Engineer that is creating Blockchain software or building a cloud infrastructure.
One of the next blog posts will be dedicated to a more detailed review of these categories and everything you need to know about a career in one of them.
Now that we have covered this, let’s move to the concrete question - what are some new jobs that Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies will create. Please keep an open mind about this - we, the Crypto Careers team have seen thousands of jobs in the last few months, but it is very likely that we have missed something. If you feel that this is the case, just drop us a note and we will be happy to expand the blog post.
Some new jobs currently created in the blockchain industry are:
- Community Management - Crypto and Blockchain is currently a very community-driven industry and most of the innovation and chit-chatter happens in Discord, Telegram and Twitter. Blockchain companies are constantly hiring people that manage these communities, make them grow and often answer questions like “When Binance” :). A very interesting subset of Community Management is the one related to managing communities of developers working on a repository / project. There are some strong indicators that there will be more of these roles to be filled. Here are some examples of “Community Manager” jobs.
- Token Economist - whenever a new company is planning to launch a token, they have to make sure that the economic incentives for people actually using the token are set correctly. This is where you need a unique combination of someone who understands psychology, game theory, finance and general economics, as well as a pinch of financial markets. A few openings for Token Economists to get a feeling.
- Cryptography Researcher - cryptocurrencies and blockchain-related products are by default decentralized networks, which means that there has to be a consensus algorithm that makes sure that all parties communicate and exchange value fairly. Creating such an algorithm requires tremendous knowledge of traditional cryptography, the recent development in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Monero / Cryptonite and the demand for such roles will continue to grow. Some open positions for Cryptography specialists.
- Cryptocurrency Trader - I agree, this one is slightly debatable. My argumentation is that trading itself is a very special skill, however trading 365/24/7 markets with hundreds of different platforms is a new job and no preparation of traditional trading can get you ready for this - you learn it by doing. Here are some “Trader” jobs.
Some new jobs that will emerge soon, but have not yet:
- Security Experts for Corporate Wallets - we can only assume that cryptocurrencies will soon (or not) enter the corporate world even more. Corporations have different requirements on handling money and assets and there will be roles that will be created with this need.
- Digitalization Manager / Product Manager - basically this will be someone who will check business cases at companies and propose blockchain related solutions that do make sense. Currently, there is very little use cases for Blockchain in traditional businesses besides financial services, so I only assume that demand there will grow with more blockchain products hitting the market. In all honesty, Crypto Careers has a huge selection of Product Management jobs too, if you are interested in this particular category.
Some mixed cases (not a new job but requiring a very specific set of new skills):
- Cryptocurrency Analyst - I agree that you need a very specific skillset to do this job, but is not something that cannot be learned in a few weeks by doing some investing yourself.
Some other interesting jobs that in my opinion are not going to grow that much but have been mentioned in the comments below.
- Mining Expert - sure, you need people to build and deploy cryptocurrency mining equipment, but most of the people working in this area are private individuals and it is highly unlikely that a company will go into this business. Of course, we do have producers or
